5 Coaches on the Hot Seat Entering Week Seven

These five coaches need their teams to perform well in Week Seven of the NFL season. Note: Coaches whose teams are on their bye weeks don’t qualify for this weekly column.

1. Pat Shurmer, Cleveland Browns

With the new owner Jimmy Haslem taking over the organization and former Eagles president Joe Banner running the day to day operations, Shurmer is likely looking at his last season with the Browns no matter how well his young team performs.

2. Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys

Dallas played very well in Week Six versus the Ravens. Baltimore has only lost twice at home in the last two years, and the Cowboys were a missed field goal away from a win. Nevertheless a 2-3 record isn’t pleasing owner Jerry Jones, and if the inconsistent play continues Garrett could be on the chopping block come seasons end.

3. Ron Rivera, Carolina Panthers

Far more hype than substance through six weeks. The Panthers were the sexy pick to make the playoffs with super rookie Cam Newton, three star running backs, and the return of linebacker Jon Beason from injury.

Newton is stuck in a sophomore slump, the running game is inconsistent at best, and the defense has struggled under coordinator Shawn McDermott. Despite expectations, Rivera’s Panthers are tied for the worst record in the conference.

4. Jason Schwartz, Detroit Lions

Even though the Lions got an overtime win last week in Philadelphia, the team looked terrible on offense for the first three quarters. Quarterback Mathew Stafford had just seven completions and star wide receiver Calvin Johnson just one catch.

The Lions exploded for 200+ yards of offense in the fourth quarter, but following the Lions’ first playoff appearance in more than a decade, the expectations were very high entering 2012. Detroit sits at 2-3 and is already two games behind the Bears and a game behind Green Bay in the division.

5. Chan Gailey, Buffalo Bills

Owner Ralph Wilson isn’t a man who makes wild changes with coaches very often, and Gailey likely can survive this season despite Buffalo’s up and down start.

The Bills were expected by many to make a jump this season especially on defense with the addition of Mario Williams to rush quarterbacks. The defense has been mediocre at best and terrible at times (See Jets Week One, Patriots Week Four, 49ers Week Five), and the offense hasn’t looked much better.

Buffalo has surrendered 55 more points than they’ve scored. Luckily for the Bills, their division is down this season also with all four teams with three wins a piece.

Coaches With A Bye Week To Pay Attention To

  1. Andy Reid has his Eagles under-achieving at 3-3 and just fired his defensive coordinator.
  2. Norv Turner has been the annual candidate on the hot seat for a few years. The epic 24-point collapse in Week Six to the Broncos has him right back in his usual chair.
